New
27 Holes Golf Course Designed By Gary Player- January
2008
Press Release
January 10, 2008 - The beginning of January saw the opening
of a new course in Almeria after an ambitious remodeling
process. The restoration of the Almerimar golf course enables
golfers to enjoy the original design by Gary Player and whilst
meeting changing customer requirements for golf in Almeria.
Having successfully provided impeccable facilities for 30
years to golfers in the Almería area, the refurbishment of the
original golf course began in 2005 to adapt it to the needs of
today’s golfer.
The first phase comprised the construction of a 9-hole
extension to the existing 18-hole course, taking it to 27
holes. This enlargement made it possible to undertake the
refurbishment of the original 18-holes by phases as 18-holes
remained operational at all times.
Towards the end of 2005, the second phase of the
refurbishment took place with the renewal of holes 10 to 18.
This was completed in spring of 2006.
The final phase comprised the refurbishment of 9 holes from
the original course. These opened at the beginning of
January.
IMPROVEMENTS
There have been significant improvements to the course: The
golf course has a new, efficient irrigation system that helps
to preserve the environment, along with a fertilization system
which ensures an environmentally sound use of fertilizer.
The original design by Gary Player has been respected
throughout the renewal process.
The lakes that originally were artificial, are now filled
with water from the subsoil. Furthermore, a new lake has been
built at tee 1.
The tees and fairways have been increased in depth by 20cm
of sand and sown with a thin grass Princesa 77.
The sand has been completely replaced and the greens have
been sown with L93, providing them with more movement and
falls. Additionally, most have been increased in size.
The bunkers have been renewed and some have been extended.
Also, new bunkers have been built at holes 5 and 7.
The distance between each tee and hole has been increased
and on some of the holes, the tees have been elevated to allow
better visibility for the golfer. All amenities have been
reformed and the practice course has been improved.
The complete project has restored the original 18 holes and
developed 9 extra holes for shorter round. To ensure that the
27-hole Almerimar Golf Resort is successfully changing with the
times and adapting to shifts in golfers requirements making the
course a key destination in the golf offering of Andalusia.
